Silhouette

Ever encounter one of those writing prompts from BuzzFeed? I've only ever seen it once. It had several blank squares that you can choose and each one had a prompt behind it. The one I chose gave me this: Write an argument between two characters without dialogue.

I tried. And this is what I got. Not much of an argument, really but I'm happy with it.

I Saw Her

I  wanted to write something like this last year after a long night of partying in the city. I don't do that very often. I tried writing this many times but to no avail. I always got caught up trying to accurately recount the night. It wasn't working. So I shelved that piece for a while. Or a year. Then I just had to give it a go again. It came a little easier this time around.

Flowers in Her Hair

I wrote Flowers in Her Hair about a year and a half ago when I saw this particularly beautiful woman walk into the room with, you guessed it, flowers in her hair. She entered the room wearing this flowing white sundress and I was enamored by this free spirit that she represented. And almost instantaneously, this little piece came to fruition. It took me over a year to 'fess up to my friend that this had been about her. I was scared she'd be insulted, or perhaps she'd think I was some creep. But I had to tell her. So I did, and I was pleasantly surprised that neither scenario came true. Instead she was flattered and it had made her happy. In turn, that made me happy.

Distraction

The last two pieces were not necessarily new. They've been posted before, though not in its typed form. This one, however has never been posted.

Here's the skinny on this one. It's mostly about the ex, Stephanie. I believe it's the first time I've ever written about how I dealt with the break up. It only took me the better part of a year and a half to put it down.

Small Window

One night, in Toms River, New Jersey, I couldn't sleep. Insomnia took over. A song titled Small Window by Luluc was playing over and over in my head. I wrote this down on paper first but it needed a Royal Treatment. So here it is.

The Royal Treatment (Get it?)

Welcome, once again.
As some of you may know, this is not my first foray into launching some kind of blog. I greatly appreciate the time you spent reading my last endeavor, that boozy "What am I drinking this week" blog. It may be a while before that one will be resurrected. However, I humbly ask you to take a gander at this new project.

So let me explain what this is. Several months ago I bought a Royal Mercury typewriter after heavy bouts of writer's block. At that point, I was staring at my laptop with a word processor on screen and I was coming up with absolute rubbish. I needed a change of scenery. My hands were never too good with pen and paper so I thought a typewriter would be the change I needed. And here we are.

Most of what will show up here will likely be mobile posts. I'm blessed with a fantastic phone that takes incredibly detailed photographs and I want to take advantage of this. I'll be taking photos of the "finished" pieces and just upload them here seamlessly.

I was, as Jerseyans say, down the shore and this literally started as a little stupid ditty in my head as we were enjoying the peace found at the edges of Island Beach State Park. I thought it was a little clever. There's a little bit of the band "The Little Ones" in there, let me know if you find it.

So that's that for the inaugural post.

Thanks again, friends.
